How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the usable fresh water in the tank, not just the advertised tank size if you keep a reserve.
  2. Enter the number of people sharing the tank.
  3. Use a realistic daily amount that includes drinking, cooking, dishwashing, handwashing, and short rinses if those come from the tank.
  4. Round the result down and plan a reserve before travel days, hot weather, or remote stops.

Examples and practical tips

Weekend RV trip

A 40 gallon tank for two people at 5 gallons each per day lasts about 4 days before reserve. If showers use the same tank, a safer plan may be 2 to 3 days.

Family dry camping

A 50 gallon tank for four people at 6 gallons each per day lasts about 2.1 days. Bringing drinking water separately or using campground facilities can extend tank duration.

Does this include drinking water?

Can gray water fill first?
