How Much Does Gravel Weigh?

Gravel is often measured by volume when you calculate the project, but sold by weight when you order it. That is why cubic yards and tons both matter.

The exact weight changes with stone type, moisture, compaction, and the amount of fines mixed into the material. Use the numbers below for estimating, then confirm with your local quarry or supplier.

Approximate gravel weight by type

A common planning range is about 1.3-1.5 tons per cubic yard for many driveway and landscape aggregates.

Gravel TypeApproximate WeightBest use
Pea gravelAbout 1.4 tons/yardDecorative beds, paths, light drainage
Crushed stoneAbout 1.3-1.5 tons/yardDriveways, base layers, drainage
River rockAbout 1.35 tons/yardDecorative drainage and swales
#57 stoneAbout 1.4 tons/yardDrainage, driveway surface, concrete base

Why gravel weight matters

Weight matters when you order material, estimate delivery cost, or plan to haul gravel yourself. A small trailer may hold the volume you want but still be overloaded by the weight.

Wet gravel can weigh more than dry gravel. Dense crushed stone with fines can also weigh and compact differently than clean washed stone.

Gravel weight formula

Start with volume: length times width times depth. Convert inches of depth to feet first. Then divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

To estimate tons, multiply cubic yards by the tons-per-yard factor for your material. Example: 4 cubic yards of #57 stone at 1.4 tons per yard is about 5.6 tons.

Hauling tips

  • Check payload rating before loading a pickup or trailer.
  • Ask the supplier for the actual tons-per-yard estimate for that specific material.
  • Order a small reserve for waste, low spots, and edge loss.
FAQ

How Much Does Gravel Weigh? questions

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

Many gravel products fall around 1.3-1.5 tons per cubic yard. A practical default for #57 stone and pea gravel is about 1.4 tons per yard.

How much does wet gravel weigh?

Wet gravel can weigh more because water fills voids and coats fines. Treat any estimate as approximate and confirm truck or trailer limits before hauling.

Can my trailer haul gravel?

Only if the loaded weight stays under the trailer and vehicle payload ratings. Gravel gets heavy fast, so check ratings before loading.

Is a yard of gravel the same as a ton?

No. A cubic yard measures volume. A ton measures weight. The conversion depends on material density.
